The URO Collection

The United Restitution Organization (URO) was founded by former Jewish-German lawyers to help those persecuted during the Nazi era obtain compensation and restitution from the German government.

The archival collection of the organization, preserved in the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People (CAHJP), consists of around 1,500 boxes (each containing 10–30 files), 1,000 of which had never been catalogued before. It includes materials from URO departments in Tel Aviv, London, Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne, Jerusalem, and Munich.

Digitizing and Cataloging Project

Between 2024 and 2027, the Archives are participating in a project focused on digitizing and thoroughly cataloguing the collection.

The extracted metadata provides valuable historical evidence about Shoah events and the destinies of survivors, as well as insights into German compensation laws and legislative processes. This portal was created to showcase the collection and presents 500 personal files with metadata from the URO's Tel Aviv office. Files without privacy restrictions also include scans of the original documents. The whole collection is searchable in the National Library of Israel catalog.
