Elisabeth Scherek residing in Tel Aviv, Israel, seeks compensation for harm to profession on behalf of her late husband Gabriel Leo Scherek, who was forced to give up his law practice in Berlin and worked for the Keren Hajessod from 1934 to 1939. Compensation is also sought for harm to liberty suffered by Dr. Scherek, who was arrested by the Gestapo in Baden-Baden in 1937 and held in investigative custody for ten weeks on high treason charges before the case was dropped. Restitution is also sought for precious metal items, and compensation is also sought for harm to health and for insurance policies.
Elisabeth Scherek (née Reich, formerly Gonsior), born in Posen (now Poznań, Poland), moved to Berlin in 1920. Her son Heinz Gonsior emigrated to London in 1939. Her husband Gabriel Leo Scherek, emigrated to Palestine in March 1939.
Dr. Gabriel Leo Scherek received compensation of DM 340 for harm to liberty for his 68 days of investigative custody in 1937. For harm to his profession, he received a lump-sum payment of DM 7,200 and a monthly pension of DM 600 starting November 1, 1953. In 1961 Scherek received DM 14,050 for damage to property and assets. After his death, his heirs, Elisabeth Scherek and Alfred Scherek, received DM 7,975 in restitution for relinquished precious metals on behalf of their mother, Rebecca Scherek. In 1967, a settlement granted Elisabeth Scherek a widow's pension of DM 250 per month, starting from January 1, 1963, based on her husband's employment with a Jewish organization.
The case was handled by the United Restitution Organization (URO) offices in Tel Aviv, Cologne, Berlin, and Jerusalem, with involvement from the Advisory Committee for Pension Claims of Jewish Community Employees, a body of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany.
