Arie Leibowitz, residing in Tel Aviv, Israel, seeks compensation for harm to life suffered in the Nazi era by his father, Aron Goldberg, a lawyer who went missing in late 1944 after being in the Lemberg Ghetto. His paternal aunt, Frieda Goldberg, went missing during the war. His maternal uncle, Ilja Armarnik, perished in a concentration camp shortly before the end of the war. The applicant, Arie Leibowitz, was born in Krynica, Poland, on March 17, 1945. After the war, he lived with his mother in Czechoslovakia and later in a DP camp in Germany before immigrating to Israel in August 1947. He agreed to a settlement of DM 20,000, which was later rejected by the defendant. The applicant's lawyer, in a motion dated August 7, 1969, requested a monthly pension of DM 450 starting from July 1, 1968. A hardship compensation application was also filed for the applicant under § 171 BEG. URO offices in Munich, Tel Aviv, Haifa, and London, as well as the Jewish Agency for Palestine, were involved in the case. The case proved difficult due to familial disputes between Aries mother Sonia-Sofia Leibowitz and the family of her first husband Aron Goldberg.
